Welcome

Individuals’ dwelling decisions –where and how they live– hold the potential of driving sustainability. However, citizens often lack the necessary tools to inform their decision-making.

The Mapdwell Project is about enabling communities with information that will drive sustainable practices, community awareness, energy efficiency, and smart development through the aggregate effort of individuals. By transforming accurate, open, and unbiased information into education and action, the project proposes an organic –yet highly auspicious– approach to the fossil fuel dilemma.

The Mapdwell team works at the intersection of data, design, and technology to craft innovative and intuitive analysis, assessment, and visualization tools –both at the building and context levels– for urban and non-urban regions and systems.

Mapdwell –a collective of academics and researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) and top professionals– actively engages communities, municipalities, and government agencies to help them disseminate knowledge and obtain sustainability.

Welcome!

What We Do

The Mapdwell platform is host to a family of informational tools –or modules– that provide accurate, open, and unbiased information.

Solar System, its first module, is an interactive online rooftop solar mapping tool designed, engineered, and developed by Mapdwell; the unique technology and workflow behind Solar System’s simulation process, the most comprehensive and accurate approach available today, is licensed exclusively to Mapdwell through a Patent and Copyright License from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.).

Solar System allows users to precisely estimate rooftop solar electric potential (PV panels) of every building in a given city and translates the results into metrics that inform a decision. Future tools –at the unit and context levels– are under development and will expand the scope of the platform.

The Mapdwell Project stands at the vanguard of scientific inquiry and information technology. Future applications will capitalize on Mapdwell’s strong institutional relationships and its team’s position at the forefront of innovation, research, and technology.

PRESS RELEASE | Mapdwell Expands to Nation’s Capital

Partnership with the Government of the District of Columbia brings ‘Solar System’ to Washington

Boston, Massachusetts – December 11th, 2013 – For Immediate Release

Mapdwell announced today the unveiling of Mapdwell Solar System for the Washington, D.C. area, in partnership with the District Department of the Environment (DDOE), expanding the state-of-the-art rooftop solar resources tool to the nation’s capital. The strategic alliance brings actionable information to residents, businesses, installers, and industry stakeholders in the D.C. area. It aims to advance education in solar as a renewable energy source and promote solar adoption for distributed generation.

DDOE was the first of several organizations to partner with Mapdwell – an M.I.T. spin-off – after introducing the platform for Cambridge, Mass. The District’s map comes only seven months after the initial rollout of Solar System, and constitutes the first step in Mapdwell’s expansion of the platform in the United States and abroad. In October Mapdwell was recognized among a select group of “high-impact, early stage companies” as part of the South by Southwest Start-Up Springboard, having been selected by the Advisory Board of SXSW Eco, the sustainability version of the world renowned, cutting edge film, music, and interactive conference and festival.

The expanded web application builds upon Solar System’s powerful integrated platform, defined by its intuitive design, engaging interactive user experience, and delivery of the most comprehensive and accurate cost/benefit analysis – open to all. Mapdwell’s proprietary technology has been licensed exclusively from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

For the D.C. sample, Solar System maps the solar potential of over 160,000 buildings, identifying high yielding solar resources for over 2.5 gigawatts of potential solar photovoltaic installations and over $10 billion in local business. It also pinpoints more than 800 existing installations equivalent to ~4 Mega Watts of installed capacity.

This project is yet another testament to Mapdwell’s ability to scale and to the value of its innovative approach toward achieving sustainability collectively.

PRESS RELEASE | "Solar System" Debuts as First Module of Mapdwell Project

Mapdwell unveils urban mapping and informatics platform with rooftop solar potential tool

BOSTON, Massachusetts ― May 7, 2013 ― For Immediate Release

Mapdwell unveiled today its online urban mapping and informatics platform, mapdwell.com, alongside Mapdwell Solar System, a next-generation online rooftop solar potential application.

The brainchild of top creative professionals, academics, and researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mapdwell is a framework built for the processing and delivery of vast, complex urban information through beautiful, easy-to-understand online interactive tools.

The first module of the Mapdwell platform, Mapdwell Solar System, is the most accurate and user-friendly solar mapping and information application available in the United States. Built upon an exclusive license from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mapdwell Solar System advances proprietary, industry-leading technology to enable the:

  • Determination of slope, shape, and orientation of building rooftops;
  • Simulation of solar irradiation taking into account historical weather data;
  • Consideration of physical obstructions like vegetation and surrounding buildings;
  • Computation of potential solar power generation;
  • Application of national, state, and local utility rates and incentive programs;
  • Delivery of accurate and unbiased information in a beautiful, user-friendly interface.

Mapdwell Solar System employs a rich framework for the processing of LiDAR data, the computation of solar radiation, and the purveyance of meaningful and relatable information to consumers regarding their solar potential. The framework is built upon the familiar and intuitive Google Maps API as a rich web map service, providing this information in objective metrics such as system size in kWh as well as relatable measures like the number of trees saved by installing a solar system.

Mapdwell Solar System’s powerful platform, user-friendliness, speed, accuracy and stability, make it the best and most thorough web-based rooftop photovoltaic potential tool. It is based on the latest web and data management technology and hosted following the fastest and most reliable standards. It provides efficient and cost-effective scalability at the cluster, city, county, and state levels.

Mapdwell is a multi-disciplinary group of engineers, architects, and building scientists from M.I.T., brought together by a simple realization: individuals have the underlying capacity to drive positive change through their dwelling decisions –where and how they live– but lack the necessary tools to inform their decision-making. The Mapdwell Project was inspired by a single purpose, to deliver meaningful information with powerful and beautiful tools.

Mapdwell’s mission is to provide information at the consumer level that will drive community awareness, sustainable practices, energy efficiency, and smart growth through the aggregate effort of individuals. We believe accurate, transparent, and unbiased information is a significant catalyst of positive change.

Mapdwell works at the intersection of data, design, and technology to craft innovative and comprehensive analysis, assessment, visualization, and information tools for buildings and urban and non-urban regions and systems. We turn data into information that can be transformed into action.
